It is a very fresh, contemporary and trendy looking carpet with very natural colours.

Trade Winds is a locally manufactured tufted broadloom product that is suitable for both residential and light commercial use. It is made of 100% BCF Stain shield yarn (with stain shield fibre protection) and a POWERbac backing.

We are delighted to inform you that we just received the test results from our first production trials back from Germany, and as expected these trials were extremely successful.

We are therefore now ready to take Silver Plus to the next level and we will start applying this on new production runs. As a first step, we will start applying Silver Plus on all our nylon broadloom products, with the other products to follow shortly.

You will understand that most of our current stock doesn’t have the Silver Plus anti-microbial treatment yet, and we therefore kindly ask you to contact our customer service when you want stock of the Silver Plus treated carpets only.

We are confident however that before the end of the year the majority of our nylon broadloom stocks will have the Silver Plus applied to it, and thank you in advance for your kind cooperation and support.

MAIN BENEFITS OF SILVERPLUS®

1. Due to its large active surface, SILVERPLUS® is effective in very small quantities. Already 1 ppb of mobile silver ions can inhibit bacterial cell growth significantly. Hence silver ions in SILVERPLUS® are more efficient by far than other antimicrobial products. This is reflected in the low application quantities of SILVERPLUS®. Small silver ions – big effect!

2. The antimicrobial effect remains fully functional during the lifetime of the carpet. SILVERPLUS® deposits in the yarn interstices and is permanently bonded by strong adhesive force which cannot be removed even after multiple cleaning sessions.

3. SILVERPLUS® is compatible with water, oil and soil-repellent finishes, which means that there is a double protection mechanism in place. The first protection by making sure that spills are not penetrating into the carpet, and the second one by having SILVERPLUS® as an anti-microbial protection.

4. The use of SILVERPLUS® has been shown to have no negative effects to the environment. The quantities of silver which SILVERPLUS® returns to nature correspond to the average natural silver content of natural soil or rocks.

Van Dyck Carpets is proud to announce that it has partnered with the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) and that for every square metre of carpeting sold in South Africa, Van Dyck Carpets will make a contribution to SARLA.

The Rugby Legends is a group of ex-Springbok and Provincial rugby players who have formed a charitable trust. The initial purpose of the trust was to raise funds for the development of rugby at grassroots and club rugby level, thus providing a vehicle for the ex-players to put something back into rugby. Today the Legends has grown into a full-blown social awareness charity using sport as the catalyst to bring people together and then evolving their sporting aspirations as well as educating them about health, wealth and social characteristics.

They have embarked on a sustainable Legacy Park project which has become their flagship, whereby over a 10-year period they plan to raise one billion Rands to build 400 multi-purpose facilities in the economically disadvantaged communities to help our country solve its sporting and social challenges, and as a consequence will feed 500 000 street kids per day.

John Allan (ex-Scottish and Springbok hooker) is the CEO of SARLA and through his leadership and the generous sponsorships SARLA has achieved the following milestones over the past 6 years:

1. Held over 60 development clinics around the country and coached approximately 45 000 previously disadvantaged players.
2. Raised in excess of R5-million through various charity fundraising events, which has been used for charitable causes, as well as over R30-million in sponsorships, and this money has been used for the development of sport at grassroots level.
3. Launched a series of rugby/sport and social development programmes which are sustainable within the sporting circles and communities; these programmes are for the benefit of all sports and can be used accordingly. Two programmes which are up and running are Legends Iqhawe and the Adopt-a-School policy which will work closely with the sporting codes – and Legacy Parks and Street Kids Crime Prevention programmes with government bodies, sporting codes, charities and corporates.

Reach for Recovery – A Breast Cancer Association

VAN DYCK in association with Top Carpets supports a breast cancer association called Reach for Recovery. Reach for Recovery is a free and voluntary support group which aims to supply practical and emotional support to breast cancer patients and their families. This helps in enabling them to make personal decisions and to find the motivation for recovery with the best possible quality of life. This is just one more Non-Profit Organisation that VAN DYCK has taken interest in. To do our bit for the breast cancer patients, a large percentage of all our sales at Top Carpets is donated to Reach for Recovery. This contributes towards sending out more volunteers, printing more leaflets or creating more Recovery bags. So each room you carpet doesn’t just bring comfort to your space but it makes a huge difference in someone’s life.

2 of our employees enrolled at the Technical University of Liberec in Czech Republic in 2009. The Technical’s roots lie in the Technical College of Mechanical Engineering which was founded in 1953. Cyril Kumalo and Artwel became a part of 8 000 students enrolled in 6 faculties of the university. They were a part of the Faculty of Textile Engineering for 2 years.  They were awarded a scholarship by the Department of Economic Development and CTFL SETA. This was to help advance their careers. They graduated in June 2011.

The young men liked a lot about Czech Republic, disliked a little but experienced a lifetime of an opportunity. As expected from anyone, they became homesick and missed the familiarity of South Africa. They had to adjust to unfavourable weather conditions which saw winter reach -22 degrees Celsius, a temperature we know nothing about in South Africa. The language barrier often became a problem as very few Czechs speak English. That however did not hinder their level of socialising. They were keen to learn more, know more and to come back home well informed. They found that the Czechs were just as keen to share their culture. They were friendly and accommodative and treated all visitors like locals. It was surprising to learn that Czech women feel better if they are paying for the men when they are out on dates. Clearly Czech men need a lesson or 2 from South African men which I hope Artwel and Cyril were not shy in sharing with the Czechs – never let a woman pay her way!

Jokes aside, this experience of going abroad was one the young men would never forget. They had a chance to make friends and connections with students from all over the world; France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Pakistan, Brazil, Canada and Russia to name but a very few. They were lectured by lecturers who are well recognised all over the world.

Soft floor covering such as carpeting gives a much better thermal insulation compared to other flooring options as it absorbs sound and thus reduces the noise levels and improves the overall air quality. Research conducted showed that walking on hard surfaces disturbed more particles which became airborne and entered the breathing zone. In contrast, carpeted surfaces trapped more particles so that walking disturbed fewer particles. The findings were that there was less dust in the breathing zone over carpeted floors. Carpets act like a filter, trapping allergens away from the breathing zone so they can be removed through proper cleaning.

VAN DYCK offers a type of underlay called Eco-lay; its own brand of environmentally friendly underlays, manufactured from the finest quality recycled rubber granules that are bonded together using synthetic rubber binders to produce a firm, comfortable, high- performance crumb-rubber underlay. Apart from using recycled materials, Eco-lay is in itself recyclable at the end of its useful life. While most underlays collapse over time Eco-lay products are not air-filled and therefore do not collapse because of their unique compound formulation. It is also totally non-absorbent and unaffected by moisture. The smooth, soft rubber construction provides considerable anti-fatigue properties and excellent underfoot comfort. Eco-lay underlay is thus perfect for increasing the life span of your carpet. An added benefit is that it insulates heating pads from the underlying concrete which saves energy and increases heating speed.

In outdoor areas it is important to select products that are weather proof. VAN DYCK has a range of artificial grass products that are made for landscaping areas that have limited access to water and light, such as your garden and deck. These products need almost no maintenance and are also UV protected to avoid fading and degradation.

Van Dyck attended The Green Building Conference and Exhibition again this year which was held in Sandton. This exhibition saw different companies come together to showcase their products and services and how each is contributing to greener buildings and sustainability in South Africa.

This was an ideal opportunity for Van Dyck to officially launch our new branding and corporate image and the new green and contemporary logo displayed at our stand tied in perfectly with the very purpose of this event. Not only that, our floor was furnished with a customised design of Oxygen carpet tiles, a range that is manufactured from more than 85% post consumer recycled material. We even went a step further by introducing the world’s first ever QR Code carpet tile. QR is short for quick response i.e. it can be read quickly by a cell phone. It is a 2D barcode that can store and digitally present much more data including URL links to websites. Our QR coded carpet tiles displayed at our stand enabled a direct link to Van Dyck’s brand new website, a tool that was used by many of the exhibition visitors.

The topics presented and discussed at the conference were very interesting and at the end of a very exciting first day everyone was invited to a Cocktail Evening that Van Dyck was honoured to sponsor.
